Players Getting Ready for Cavalier Day Camp at FYAA Park

ATTIRE

*shirt:  avoid dark-color shirts as these absorb heat.  White/light colors are always preferable, as well as shirts made of "technical fabrics".  These fabrics keep players cooler by wicking moisture away from the skin to the outside layer where it can evaporate.  Cotton simply absorbs sweat making the shirt heavier and retaining heat.
Each camper will receive a free Cavalier Soccer Camp t-shirt on the last day of camp.

*shorts:  soccer shorts are suggested.  Avoid khakis, denim and basketball shorts.

*socks and shinguards: high soccer socks which cover shinguards.  To avoid blisters, two layers are suggested.  The base layer sock ("liner") should be a thin "technical fabric" sock.  The shin guard should be put on over this base layer, with the soccer sock over the shinguard.  Shinguards are MANDATORY and must not be exposed.

*soccer cleats: a cleated shoe (or "boot") is highly recommended.  Flat sneakers may be worn, but it is very difficult for the player to stop, cut and change direction as flats offer no traction in the grass.  Also, baseball cleats are PROHIBITED, as they contain an extra cleat at the front end of the outsole which may be injurious to an opponent in a challenge on the ball.  Baseball cleats are also often metal, which is not allowed at the Cavalier Camp.  Inexpensive, comfortable soccer boots usually start at $19.99 and are available in "Knee-To-Toe" packages (boots, shinguards, socks) at a discount.  Blue Ridge Soccer & Sports offers Knee-To-Toe packages from adidas, nike, puma, and others starting at $27.99

EQUIPMENT

*soccer ball: every player must bring a ball to camp, with their name clearly marked in permanent ink.  Generally, suggested ball size is: size 3 for players age 5 and younger;  size 4 for players age 6 to 9; size 5 for players 10 and older (although this is just a guideline).  Players who do not have a ball may purchase a Nike Camp Ball on the first day of camp at a discounted rate.

*water bottle: every player should bring a water bottle to camp each day.  We will provide ice and water for players to refill their water bottle as needed.  Cups will be available, but in an effort to reduce waste we prefer that each camper use a water bottle.  Be sure to put your name on your water bottle.

MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATION

*sunscreen: be aware of the damaging effects of the sun!  Your child will be in the direct sunlight for the better part of 3 hours, so we suggest that you apply sunscreen to their exposed skin before leaving the house.  Our staff will also be paying attention to identify campers who may be experiencing sunburn.

*bugspray: knats are often prevalent in the area, so applying bugspray may also be a good idea before leaving the house.
