2012 CHAMPIONS CAMP AT SWEET BRIAR COLLEGE

REGISTRATION IS OPEN FOR 2012 SWEET BRIAR CAMP

Check-in Sunday, June 24.  Check-out Thursday, June 28, 2012

Costs for various options:  2012 rates: Day Camper $285.00; Extended Day Camper $315.00;  Overnight $435.00

Who should attend:  Open to boys and girls ages 8 to 18.  Younger campers may be considered-please contact Director Jedd Zaring to discuss special circumstances.

Camp level: Generally, most of our campers have experience playing for travel clubs, from Classic to Elite level.  It is not mandatory however for campers to have club experience.  Players who aspire to play for their middle or high school, or who want to move into the club ranks are welcome.  Obviously the camp playing level will vary from year to year based on the athletic and experience level of each year's campers.  Our goal is to create a curriculum for each group of campers that pushes them into the next level and exposes them to new technical skills and tactical ideas.

Quality of our staff:  The quality and commitment of our coaching staff has been one of the strongest selling points of our camp for 20 years.  Each "Group" of campers, which is usually 25-35 campers, is coached by a "Lead Coach", with the aid of multiple  "Assistant Coaches" and "Counselors".    Lead Coaches are experienced adult women and men who are collegiate or professional coaches with many years of experience who truly enjoy teaching the game of soccer.  Most of our Lead Coaches have been coming back to Blue Ridge Soccer Academy for many years and are considered "family".  They enjoy the great commraderie of the staff, the beautiful facilities of Sweet Briar College, and the enthusiasm of our campers.  They understand how to tweak the curriculum to best ensure the success and enjoyment of their particular group of campers.  The Lead Coach's staff is comprised of  Assistant Coaches  who are adult assistant college coaches, high school or club coaches who are also experienced and highly regarded in their own right .  The staff is rounded out with Counselors, who are professional or collegiate players in the prime of their playing careers whose fitness and technical skills make them superb demonstrators for the Lead Coach.  We also choose Counselors whose maturity, work ethic and personality make them excellent role models for developing soccer players.

Day Campers at Sweet Briar
For players not interested in staying overnight at Sweet Briar, we offer two day camper options:  Day Campers participate in the morning and afternoon field sessions (8:00am-4:30pm).  Breakfast and lunch are included in the fee.  Extended Day Campers participate in all three field sessions (8:00am-8:30pm) with breakfast, lunch and dinner included in the the fee.  Both of these options also include a camp t-shirt and soccer ball.

First Day of Camp at Sweet Briar
Registration begins at 12:00pm on Sunday, June 24.  After entering the Sweet Briar campus, look for signs which will direct you to the Check-In.  You will be assigned a Check-in time in your confirmation notification.  We stagger check-in times to minimize wait time and make registration more efficient.  Overnight campers check in between 12:00 and 3:30pm, while day campers check-in between 3:30-4:30pm.  The first official camp event is the Camp Meeting, which takes place at 5:00pm. Please Note:  Parents should plan on maintaining supervision of you child until 5:00pm, when we will assume responsibility.  After the Camp Meeting, campers then go to dinner, followed by the Camp Photo.  The first field session takes place after the photo.

Last Day of Camp at Sweet Briar
Camp concludes on Thursday, June 28 after the final field session and Closing Ceremony at Upper Babcock field.  Parents are encouraged to come early for the last field session for the finals of the High Peak Sportswear Cup.  The Closing Ceremony follows and should be finished by 3:00pm.  All day campers are excused following the Closing Ceremony.  Overnight Campers and their parents should return to the residence halls for dorm check out and room inspections, and are usually finished by 4:00pm.  Room keys should be returned at this time-don't forget to pick up your key deposit!

Health Care and Insurance
A parent or guardian must complete the Medical Release and Consent Form  to grant permission for any medical attention needed during the camp. All campers must be covered by a current insurance policy. In the event of illness or injury requiring treatment, hospitalization, or surgery, family medical insurance must be used. The camp does not provide primary benefit insurance coverage.  At the Sweet Briar camp, a certified athletic trainer will be present at all field sessions.  Emergencies will be transported to Lynchburg General Hospital.

Roommate Requests and Residence Hall information at Sweet Briar
All overnight campers are encouraged to try to arrange for a friend/teammate to attend camp as his/her roommate as this smooths the transition to staying overnight away from home.  We will make every attempt to honor all roommate requests.  Additionally, campers should be sure to provide us with your school and/or team so we can match you with friends.  Most dorm rooms at Sweet Briar are doubles, but we sometimes have access to a limited number of multi-room suites.  Teammates may request a suite, however no guarantees are made.   We will room teammates/friends in adjacent rooms on the same floor.  Also please note that Sweet Briar no longer provides linens, blankets or pillows, so campers should plan on bringing those items from home.  A sleeping bag and pillow is also acceptable.  All beds in the dorms are single beds.

Evaluation Form

All campers at the Sweet Briar camp will receive a detailed Camp Evaluation Form at the end of camp.  Campers will be evaluated by the camp staff on the four basic criteria:  Technical Proficiency (skills), Tactical Understanding, the Physical Component, and the Psychological Dimension.  With this information, campers will have an action plan for self-improvement to continue after the camp.

Homesickness
Experience shows that homesickness is the number one cause of overnight camper unhappiness. Please discuss with your children ways to alleviate homesickness before it starts, such as specific times in the day to talk on the phone or by sending letters or care-packages to campers while at camp.  Attending camp with a trusted friend also helps with the transition away from home.  If needed, parents may also visit your child during camp, although this should be done in moderation.  Another option is to share a meal with your child in the Dining Hall.  Please notify us if your child is experiencing homesickness so we can help them.

Expensive equipment
Cell phones, ipods, video game consoles, jewelry, watches, etc are permitted at the Academy at Sweet Briar but we cannot be held responsible for lost or stolen items.  Personal computers, laptops, sound systems/speakers are not permitted.  In general, we discourage bringing any expensive items to camp.  Although we have not had a problem with theft in the past and overnight campers are issued room keys, we cannot guarantee the safety of any item.

Campers With Cars
Overnight campers who drive themselves to the Sweet Briar camp must turn in their car keys at check-in.  Day Campers who drive to camp each day are not permitted to transport other campers at any time during camp.

Camp Bank at Academy at Sweet Briar
Campers are encouraged to deposit any spending money in the Camp Bank.  The Bank is open during free time and there is no charge for this service.  Campers may use spending money at the Snack Bar, Camp Soccer Store, vending machines, evening pizza orders, etc.  Normal deposits range from $10-$100, depending on the age of the camper.  We will also offer to help campers with the budgeting of their money if desired.
